"Sekkaku Wazawaza Wazato "
- The students sometimes say the following.
- 1 Wazawaza tukutta nodakara takusan tabetekudasai.
- 2 Sekkaku kitekurete arigato.
- Theses sentence are a little bit strange.
- This month we will show you the fundamental meanings of both words and how to
- use them correctly.
- Usually wazawaza and sekkaku modify verbs and they are used when someone
- intends to do something. The usage of following sentences look similar,
- but the nuance of each sentence is a little bit differrent.
- "Wazawaza musuko no tameni suit
- o tsukutta noni kiniiranakatta."
- (I spent a lot of time to make a suit
- for my son, but he doesn't like it.)
- "Sekkaku musukono tameni suit o
- tsukutta noni kiniiranakatta."
- (I made a suit for my son to please him,
- but he doesn't like it.)
- "Wazawaza Nihon made kitanodakara Nihongo ga umaku naritai."
- (I came all the way to Japan ,so I want to improve my Japanese.)
- "Sekkaku Nihon made kitanodakara Nihongo ga umaku naritai."
(I have a precious chance of coming to Japan ,so I want to progress my Japanese.)
- The difference of its nuance comes from that of the fundermental meaning of each word.
- In the next paragraph I'll explain the fundamental meaning of each word.
(A) The meaning and an usage of "wazawaza"
- (1)" wazawaza" stresses the hardwork or trouble of someone's act, and the fact
- that someone made the effort or spent money or time to do something.
- "Wazawaza Narita-kukou made mukaeni itta."
- (I went all the way to Narita-Airport to meet him/her .)
- "Wazawaza biyouin ni ittanoni ame de kaminoke ga
- kusyakusyani natte shimatta.
- ( I went to a beauty shop and set my hair
- style but it rained so my hair style was
- destroyed.)
- (2)In addition "wazawaza "is used when someone does
- something on purpose.
- Although there is an easier way to take action,
- he/she chooses harder, more complicated ,
- more troublesome way or someone takes action that is not needed.
- "Chikai noni wazawaza kuruma de iku."
- (Although it is near enough for him/her to walk, he/she goes by car.)
- "Hashi ga aru noni wazawaza kawa o oyoide wataru."
- (Although there is a bridge, he/she swims across the river.)
(B)The meaning and usage of "sekkaku"
- (1) When the speaker says "yukiga futta---",
- we don't know whether this situation is preferable for him/her or not
- (untill he/she says the following ).Because this sentence tells only
- the fact.
- But when a speaker says "sekkaku yukiga futta---",we know it is
- a preferable situation for him/her and such a following sentence
- (expression) will come after this phrase.
- "Sekkaku yukiga futta no dakara yukidarumao tsukurou."
- (As it has snowed, let's make a snowman.)
- In this way by using "sekkaku" the speaker can add his/her expectation
- to the situation that it will be a valuable or preferable one for the
- speaker, and besides, that this situation will work effectively,
- not ineffectively.
- When the speaker intends to make use of its situation or to realize
- his/her expectation, the conjunction particle (da)kara is usually used.
- And when the situation worked against speaker's expection
- or speaker's expectation resulted in vain ,the conjunction particle
- "(na)noni',"temo","(no)daga" are usually used.
- " Sekkaku kite kureta no dakara ohiru o gochisou simasu. "
- (You came all the way to see me, so I will treat you to lunch.)
- " Sekkaku iitennki ni natta no dakara picnic ni ikimasyo. "
- (As it is a fine day, let's go on a picnic.)
- " Sekkaku kanojo ga denwa o kureta noni shigoto ga isogashikute
- aukoto ga dekinakatta. "
- ( She called me for a date but I was too busy to meet her.)
- "Sekkaku pasokon o katta noni zenzen tsukaikatagawakaranai."
- (Though I bought a computer ,I do't know how to use it.)
- (2)Sometimes sekkaku is used like an adjective. It is used by the form of
- "sekkakuno" and expresses various positive meanings like precious,
- valuable,nice,kind and so on.
- " Sekkakuno yasumidakara yukkurishiyou."
- (It is a precious holiday I'll relax at home.)
- "Sekkakuno gochisounanoni sameteshimatta."
- (I had cooked delicious food ,but it got cold.)>
- " Sekkakuno omanekidesu ga zannenagara ikemasen
- (Thank you very much for your kind invitation, but I'm sorry
- I can't come.)
- *Wazawaza also is used like an adjective. This usage of "wazawaza" is very limited .
(only used in the meaning of one's visit or inquiry.
-
- e.g. "Wazawaza no okoshi(coming ) , arigato."
- " Wazawaza no omimai (coming and inquiring), arigato."
- .........................................................
Now you see why (the sentence 1 )and (the sentence 2) which I mentioned
the top of this article are strange.
- (The sentence 1)" Wazawaza tsukutta no dakara tabete kudasai."
- (The sentence 2)"Sekkaku kite kurete arigatou."
The sentence (1) means
- "It was very troublesome for me to cook, but please eat it."
- It is strange and impolite to say this when you offer the food which
- you made for the guest,
- You should say
- "Sekkaku tukutta nodakara takusan tabete kudasai."
The sentence( 2)"Sekkaku kite kurete arigatou."
- This sentence doesn't make any sence. You should rewrite it as follows
- "Wazawaza kite kurete arigatou."
- (Thank you for coming to see me.)
- This sentence expresses speaker's appreciaton to the actor who made
- the effort and it is a polite expression.
- ........................................................
(C)The meaning and usage of "wazato"
- Many students take " wazato " for "wazawaza ".
- "wazato"is used when someone takes action on purpose like "wazawaza"
- So the meanings of following sentences are about the same.
- "Koibito to isyo dakara wazawaza/wazato toomawari shita.
- (I went a long way round with my girlfiend on purpose.)
- "Basu ga arunoni wazawaza/wazato aruiteitta."
- ( Buses depart from there .but he/she went on foot.)
- But the usage of "wazato" and "wazawaza"is not always the same.
- As I mentioned above "wazawaza"stresses the hardwork or trouble of
- someone's act,but "wazato" doesn't stress this.
- It stresses "on purpose", moreover there is another intention behind the action.
- That intention may be to turn one's attention to the actor, sympathised
- by others ,to deceive or cheat someone or so on.
- " Kanojo wa wazato kare no ashi o hunda."
- (She stepped on his foot on purpose.
- By stepping on his foot she wanted him to pay attention to her.)
- " Amariitakunainoni sonokowa wazato ookina koede naita."
- ( Though the pain was not so bad,the boy cried loudly to have
- other's sympathy.)
- ..........................................................
