TAISHITE AND TOTTE

1. ---nitaishite (noun + nitaishite)

"nitaishite" functions like a particle to mean for, to, toward or against and it marks the object.
It can be replaced by a particle "ni",but it is used mainly in written language. By using "nitaishite" instead of "ni", the object is stressed more.
We hope you can learn how to use "nitaishite" through example sentences below.

Kokumin no ooku wa seiji nitaishite fushinkan o idaiteiru.
(Most people of the country have a distrust of politics.)
Kare no gendoo nitaishite hankan o motsu hito ga ooi.
(Many people have ill-feeling to his behavior.)
Wanman keiei nitaishite juugyooin ga koogishita.
(The employees made a protest against the dictator's management.)
Kyooiku nitaishite netsui o motteiru kadooka ga mondaida.
(The question is whether the teacher shows zeal for education or not)
Wagakuni wa tojookoku nitaishite tagaku no shien o shiteiru.
(Our country gives a large amount of economic aid for developing countries.)
Tanakasan wa Keikosan nitaishite tokuni yasashii.
(Mr.Tanaka is kind especially to Keiko.)
Yunyuuhin nitaishite kanzei ga kakerareru.
( There is a tariff on imported goods.)
Kaisya nitaishite dasareta yookyuu wa zenbu kyohisareta.
(Our demands for the company are all rejected.)
Kono shoo wa kooseki no atta hito nitaishite okurareru.
(This prize goes to a person who makes remarkable contributions.)

Kotoshi no boonas wa eigyooseiseki no yokatta hito nitaishite dake shikyuusareru.
(The bonus of this year are paid only to the employees who show a good performance.)

*When " nitsishite" modifies noun, "nitaishiite" becomes "nitaisuru" or "nitaishiteno".

Seihu wa higaisha nitaisuru hoshoo o kangaeru bekida.
(The government should compensate all victims.)
Kare nitaisuru sonkei no kimochi ga uragirareta.
(He mocked my respect in him.)
Oya no kodomo nitaisuru ai wa eienda.
(Parents have eternal love for children,)
Jishin nitaisuru sonae o banzen ni shiyoo.
(We should take all possible provision for earthquake,)
Kare nitaishite no kimochi wa tokubetsuna mono dehanai.
(He is not my boy friend, just a friend.)

*"Nitaishite" can't be used with the verbs which work strongly and direct to the object such as sawaru(touch), naguru(hit) sonkeisuru(respect) ,keru(kick),),homeru(praise),shikaru(scold) aisuru(love), and etc.

(F=false R=right)

(F) Kare wa monku o iu tomodachi nitaishite nagutta.
(R) Kare wa monku o iu tomodachi o nagutta.
(He hit his friend who had complained to him.)
(F) Otto wa tsuma nitaishite aishiteita.
(R) Otto wa tsuma o aishiteita.
(The husband loved his wife.) (F)Kare wa kanojyo no kami nitaishite fureta.
(R) Kare wa kanojyo no kami ni fureta.
(He touched her hair.) (F)Seito nitaishite nihongo o oshieru.
(R) Seito ni nihongo o oshieru.
(I teach the students Japanese.)

2. --nitotte (noun + nitotte)


"Nitotte" also functions like a particle to mean for.

Suzukisan wa watashi nitotte oya to onajidesu.
(Mr.Suzuki is like a father to me.)
Oya nitotte kodomo wa takaramonoda.
(Children are treasures to their parents.)
Dare nitottemo taisetsunano wa kenkoodesu.
(The precious thing for everybody is health.)
Wakamono nitotte no mirai wa akarui.
(The future for young people is bright.)
Nihon nitotte ajia no kuniguni tono kankei wa juuyooda.
(The relationship with Asian countries is important for Japan.)

* As seen in the following sentence, some students mistake
"nitaishite" and "nitotte".

(F) Watashi nitaishite nihongo ‚—a totemo muzukashii.
(R) Watashi nitotte nihongo ‚—a totemo muzukashii.

(Japanese is very difficult for me.)
